Stephen Lewis

  • Photographer, Director

Stephen Lewis is a still life photographer guided by a deep appreciation for objects and a lifelong practice of observation. Lewis uses elegant compositions and surprising juxtapositions to highlight beauty and craftsmanship. He draws on a wide range of techniques to capture diverse subjects, from luxury consumer products to everyday items. “I strive to communicate clearly and efficiently, even when conveying complex or subtle ideas,” Lewis explains. “I enjoy incorporating humor, irreverence and the unexpected to hold the viewer’s attention and invite deeper engagement. I consider where the viewer’s eye will travel and build my photographs to direct their focus.”

For much of his career, Lewis kept his personal artistic work separate from his commercial endeavors.  He now brings more attention to his artistic practice, integrating it into his commissioned projects while developing exhibitions and books. Although a subtle distinction remains between his artistic and commercial work, his clear, graphic and balanced style is a constant.

Lewis has created two books with editor and writer Matt Hranek: A Man & His Watch (2017), made by traveling the world with a portable studio to photograph 100 iconic timepieces, and A Man & His Kitchen (2023), a cookbook published by Artisan.

Lewis has contributed editorial work to Frederic, Smithsonian, Condé Nast Traveler, Vogue, JCK, Numéro, W and The New York Times Magazine. His commercial clients include Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co., Piaget, Messika, John Hardy, David Yurman, Tom Ford Beauty and Victoria Beckham Beauty.
