Rahim Fortune is a visual artist from the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma who uses photography to ask fundamental questions about American identity. In intimate portraits and landscapes, Fortune captures the narratives of individual families and communities, exploring the shifting geographies of migration and resettlement. His work offers a reflection on how these histories are imprinted on the landscapes of Texas and the American South.
Fortune’s commissioned work spans documentary, portraiture and fashion, with clients including AnOther, The New Yorker, The New York Times, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Re-Edition, i-D, Bottega Veneta, Carhartt WIP, Coach and Nike, among others.
Fortune’s critically acclaimed book, I Can’t Stand to See You Cry, published by Loose Joints in 2021, won the prestigious Rencontres d’Arles Louis Roederer Discovery Award in 2022. His latest book, Hardtack, published by Loose Joints in 2024, received praise in publications ranging from The Atlantic to AnOther. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is featured in many permanent collections, including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, LUMA Arles, the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
