Mats Gustafson

Emerging in the late 1970s at a time when fashion illustration had been eclipsed by photography, Mats Gustafson’s independent and applied arts practice nearly single-handedly reinvented the medium. Renowned for his elegant and minimalist aesthetic, Gustafson’s watercolor and cut-out paperworks demonstrate how pared-down forms can be profoundly expressive.

Gustafson’s first editorial commission was assigned in the late 1970s by Grace Coddington, then an editor at British Vogue. In 1980, he moved to New York, where fashion and portrait commissions for American Vogue and other major publications followed. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Gustafson was a frequent contributor to Vogue Italia under Franca Sozzani’s direction. His editorial work has since appeared in Vogue France, Visionaire and The New Yorker.

In addition to his collaborations with Hermès, Tiffany & Co., Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons, Gustafson has illustrated every women’s ready-to-wear and haute couture collection for Dior since 2012. The 2017 publication of Dior by Mats Gustafson featured his interpretations of twenty-five collections as well as historic designs from the brand’s archive. A second volume, focused on designs under Maria Grazia Chiuri’s tenure, will be published in fall 2024. His other monographs include Swan (2010), Watercolors (2013) and Nude (2018). Gustafson’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.
