Alastair McKimm

Born and raised in Northern Ireland, Alastair McKimm began his styling career in London after studying fashion design at Nottingham Art School. McKimm is Chief Creative Officer of Visual Talent Group and the founder and Editor-in-Chief of prototype_ magazine. Previously, McKimm was Fashion and Image Director, At Large for Vogue France (2025), and i-D’s Editor-in-Chief (2019 – 2024) and Fashion Director (2013 – 2018). His tenure at i-D is widely regarded as a period of creative excellence, combining both peerless cultural coverage and his rigorous and minimalist approach to styling. Prior to Vogue France and i-D, he contributed regularly to British Vogue, Vogue Italia and Self Service.
McKimm has consulted on campaigns and fashion shows for brands and designers including Bottega Veneta, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Moschino, Saint Laurent, The Row and Victoria Beckham. His editorial portfolio is shaped by enduring partnerships with noted photographers, including Craig McDean, Dan Jackson, David Sims, Glen Luchford, Gus Van Sant, Juergen Teller, Harmony Korine, Inez and Vinoodh, Mario Sorrenti, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Steven Klein and Willy Vanderperre. He has also fostered relationships with a new generation of photographers, regularly collaborating with Carin Backoff, Stef Mitchell, Colin Dodgson, Drew Vickers, Karim Sadli and Zoë Ghertner.
McKimm has published three books with IDEA: An IDEA book about T-shirts by Stüssy (2017), MICA (2020) and JEAN (2021). He also designed two capsule collections for Zara x LilMcKimm, about which he said: “This collection is an ode to New York. Inspired by and dedicated to my kids and all the kids growing up in the downtown parks in New York City.”
