Bill Mullen

Bill Mullen is a stylist known for bringing a sharp pop sensibility to his work. His affinity for icons of glamour and the post-punk era drew him to New York, where he immersed himself in 1980s downtown culture. Mullen made a significant impact at Details magazine during one of its most celebrated periods, serving as fashion director from 1990 to 1995 and creative director from 1995 to 1997. During his tenure, he captured the cultural zeitgeist, styling iconic covers featuring Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, River Phoenix, Morrissey, Madonna, LL Cool J, Leonardo DiCaprio, Beastie Boys and Bjork, among others.
Mullen’s tenure at Details led to collaborations with Annie Leibovitz, Richard Burbridge, Miles Aldridge, Jean-Baptiste Mondino and Mikael Jansson. His work has appeared in Esquire, Vogue, Vogue Italia, L’Uomo Vogue, Numéro, Numéro Homme, T: The New York Times Style Magazine and Vanity Fair.
From 1998 to 2007, Mullen was the design consultant for men’s collections at Versace as well as Versus, where his purview extended into womenswear. He continues as a consultant for up-and-coming designers while working most recently on projects with Vera Wang, Anna Sui, Hugo Boss, Lee Jeans and John Varvatos.
